Pursuing Calligraphy

While I was in Manila, I made a point to attend calligraphy classes knowing that two of the most successful Calligraphers in Vancouver are from Manila. I just have to do it! And it is way cheaper too!! My teacher is from the Bicol region; a young, bubbly, very talented  Bem Zenith who is only in her early 20s! She left her 1st job and pursued her passion for Calligraphy. She’s only been doing this for a year and she has come a long way!

I am happy that I took the time to do this. It is important that out of the busyness, we still make time for the things we love. ❤️

When was the last time you learned something new? I say, go do it!!

I finally was able to use a pointed pen!!!

Blogpost Series #2 – Anne and Annie: Discovering my inner artist

So who’s Annie? I can’t believe our names are so similar.  Must be destiny!

I was inspired by the movie, Julie and Julia, where Julie reinvigorated her life by challenging herself to try 524 recipes in 365 days from Julia Child‘s first book and blogged about her journey.  Now, I think I’ve found my Julia in the name of Annie Sloan.  It’s funny how a movie can ignite your thoughts and start something new.  I am so excited!

Annie Sloan is the name behind the famous decorative paint called Chalk Paint®. She has inspired many to start painting furniture in simple ways and different techniques.

So how did it all start?

Pinterest! I would go to Pinterest from time to time and look for some items I need in our home that I would like to do on my own.  I would see some really nice repainted or repurposed furnitures, painting techniques like white washing and distressing, and would dream of making one for our home.  I’ve created a “Create” board where I pin all these creative ideas.  On mother’s day, I went for my morning walk in our neighbourhood and decided to check out our local bookshop, Companion Book and got my first copy of Annie Sloan’s book, the Simple Painted Furniture, published in 1989. I was in awe! I loved it! What a perfect Mother’s day gift to myself! How she incorporates simple art to her furnitures empowers you to do something your own. I felt like I don’t have to be an expert to do one.  There’s nothing to be scared of.  So I decided to embark on this journey.  I borrowed a few other books from the library and I am drooling as I turn the pages and could not stop imagining, dreaming. I’ve looked at the books over and over again

Now, the dreaming is over.. It’s time to do it! I won’t do hundreds in 6 months.. but I’ll take a leap and try with a few pieces in our home. No more afraid of trying and making mistakes.  Just learning and enjoying the journey.

She’s also a blogger and you can follow her here. And you can also interact with so many furniture painters on her Facebook page where you’ll get more inspired to start one.

Have you been wanting to try something new? I’d like to know.  Let’s do it together and inspire each other.

With love,

[Series#1 – Post#1] Hats Off Day at The Heights

We moved to this neighbourhood almost 7 months ago and it’s only now that I’ve heard of the Hats Off Day. They’ve been celebrating it for decades and this year marks their 30th year!

I was so excited when I found about this. I saw the Hats Off Day posters on every store I walked by.  So I planned to go with the whole family.

The night before, I was sewing a top I wanted to wear (will post this too, coming soon!) and finished it at almost 5:00 am! Yikes! Rianne woke up at 8:30, ready and excited! I got up at 9:00 AM (no sleeping in!). So I get everyone ready but I couldn’t make it in time for the parade which I think started arriving in our area at 10:00. We heard it from our patio. Rianne stood there and watched while our lovely neighbors looked after her (thank goodness!) so I can get Ryan ready and setup the stroller.  I rushed and finally we were able to go on the streets and watched it close! Yippee! Rianne was the happiest kid on earth!

Super happy kiddo!

What an awesome sunny day it was! This festival is all about giving back to the community where the merchants of Burnaby Heights also known as The Heights gave back through this one day festival with a parade, bands, vintage cars, a mini train ride for kids, bouncy castles, face painting, henna tattoo and lots of fun stuff for the whole family. The whole program is packed with lots of things to see and do! The merchants also made some Hats off Day Specials for everyone to enjoy.  This is a super fun event and trully a must see every year! This will be one of our family’s yearly traditions for sure!

Blogpost Series #1 – Rediscovering Hastings Street

I’ve been dying to do this for the longest time! Since we moved in the Burnaby Heights area. Every time I walk the street, I am mesmerized by the shops I see.  I walk almost everyday, doing my grocery, or taking Rianne to the library. But all I do is look at their windows and wonder.  This time, it’ll be different! I am taking that leap, a new journey and I hope that you’ll be with me! 🙂

Hastings Street is quite a long stretch so I am dividing the series into 2 parts.  The Heights in North Burnaby and then East Vancouver.  I am just so excited to know all these local merchants in the neighbourhood.  I can’t wait to meet them all and know their stories.

Part 1 – Hastings St. in North Burnaby, Burnaby Heights/The Heights

Part 2- Hastings St. from East Vancouver to Downtown Vancouver

Hastings Street quite have a stigma to some, especially those who are visiting Vancouver, but personally, I think it’s a gem, rich in history and quite intriguing.  Believe it or not, Ricky and I dated along the streets of Hastings, in the DTES.  We used to do something he called “The Walk of Hope” back then, where he does a tour with someone who wants to volunteer at one of the non-profit organizations helping the DTES called Servants Vancouver. While I was pregnant with Rianne, I helped serve the women at Union Gospel Mission where I met the most artistic women despite their conditions. Hastings Street is a mix of sunny and gloomy but I would like to choose the brighter side and see the potential in everyone.

It’s time to rediscover Hastings Street! And I would love for you to join me in this journey!

Do you have any favourites along Hastings Street? A must see or do?  Let me know! I’d love to feature them in this series.

Rianne’s 2nd Birthday Party with Party Fun Box

We celebrated Rianne’s 2nd Birthday party at home last month.  We decided to do it at home as we can’t seem to find a good venue for our budget.  And we wanted more people to come see our place since we did not do a house warming party since we moved in our new place. And we wanted our daughter to engage with other toddlers and have unlimited play time where they are free exploring and just having fun.  At this age, she is very active and loves a lot of company to play with. When we decided to do her birthday at home, I will admit, I’m in a panic! This is the first birthday party we are hosting at home.  My mind is full of things that need to be done, food, decorations, loot bags, etc.  How am I going to do it all by myself and with a 7mo. old baby? Yikes! Fortunately, Ricky had already planned for someone to help out.  What a relief!

Coleen is a mom as well who runs her business called Party Fun Box.  It’s an online shop where you can buy party favours for pretty much all children’s party themes.  For Rianne’s birthday, since she loves Dora so much, we chose Dora the Explorer in the Jungle theme! Perfect! Ryan was Diego! 🙂  Coleen and I started chatting to plan the party and she even came over to see our place to plan the decorations. She is awesome! Her ideas are just amazing and fun, you’ll wish she had planned your birthday parties back when you were a kid. She is just so creative and so much fun!

(Colleen of Party Fun Box)

On the day of the event, she came over early to set up while we head to church for Ryan’s baby dedication.  When we arrived home, we were surprised and happy to see how our house transformed, incorporating our theme with vines, leaves and flowers hanging above the ceiling, to safari balloons, loot bags, and table setting.. we are just in awe and I felt like a kid again.  I can see how happy Rianne was seeing all of these. She is one very happy birthday girl.

To Colleen, your creativity and passion for making little kids happy has blessed us.  We are very grateful for all that you’ve done.  And I am sure that when Rianne is older and watches her birthday video, she’ll be amazed and will feel loved.  Thank you, Colleen!

For any party needs, check out Party Fun Box and support a local mom. The website is full of fun and cool stuff and lots of great ideas for parties that will surely make your child the happiest kid on that special day!

You can also check out Ricky’s blogpost on Daddy Blogger.

Happy Partying!
